One-hundred eighty outstanding 4th-, 5th-, and 6th-grade singers were selected from throughout the state to perform in the Texas Choral Director Association 2014 Elementary Honor Choir. Six of these singers were from our community and sing with the Bay Area Youth Singers: Sara Roberts of Pearland; and Lizzie Jackson, Emly Razem, Sabrina Washington, Rachel Dorsey, and Oakley Homburg of Clear Lake. They were selected via a recorded vocal audition from a pool of more than 600 singers. They rehearsed and performed July 27-29 under the direction of internationally acclaimed director Dr. Doreen Rao at the Texas Choral Directors Association Convention in San Antonio. This is the seventh consecutive year that singers from BAYS have been selected for the state honor choir.

The community music education organization kicks off the 2014-15 season of rehearsing and performing on Sept. 2. Children in grades 3-12 are invited to audition and interview for a position in one of the BAYS choirs. Email bayareayouthsingers@hotmail.com or call 832-693-3864 to schedule a time for Tuesdays, Aug. 19 or 26, at Webster Presbyterian Church, 201 W. NASA Road 1. Girls and boys with unchanged voices rehearse Tuesdays from 6-7:30 p.m., developing healthy singing voices, music listening and reading skills, and learning a broad repertoire of choral music from classical to Broadway tunes. They also develop the self-discipline and poise necessary for a high-quality musical performance. Artistic Director Mrs. Brenda Varvoutis Renander leads the choral program that begins its 8th season this fall.
