BAYS awarded Lunar Rendezvous Foundation Grant

The Bay Area Youth Singers has been awarded a grant of $4,500 from the Lunar Rendezvous Foundation to support its “Cosmic Collaboration” Choral Festival June 6 and 7, and the Summer Music Camp sponsored by both BAYS and the Bay Area Chorus.

Zikogiannis selected for TMEA Texas All-State Treble Choir, receives scholarship

Senior singer Madelyn Zikogiannis was selected for the TMEA Texas All-State Treble Choir this spring, a distinct honor for high school singers.

Madelyn was also selected to receive the Brenda Varvoutis Memorial Scholarship for a high school senior planning to major in vocal music education.

BAYS singers selected for honor choirs

Singers Molly Gibbs and Madeline Mark were selected to sing with the American Choral Directors Association national elementary honor choir in Cincinnati, Ohio at the ACDA national convention in February, 2023.

Singers Juliana Pate, Danna Lociel-Vega, Madeleine Colman, Madeline Mark, and Molly Gibbs were selected to sing with the Texas Choral Directors Association all-state elementary honor choir this July in San Antonio at the state convention.

Singers are selected based on an audio recording of specific vocal scales and songs. The audition process is extremely competitive, with many outstanding singers auditioning for a position in the honor choir.

Auri Bolton chosen to perform with top singers in Texas

Auri Bolton, left, and Dr. Jeffery Redding.Auri Bolton was selected to sing with the Texas All State Junior High Mixed Choir, sponsored by the Texas Choral Directors Association in San Antonio in late July. Auri sang with a choir of 250 outstanding singers from throughout the state of Texas.

She was selected through a highly competitive audio audition process. She is pictured with the guest conductor, Dr. Jeffery Redding of Orlando, Fla.

Auri has sung with BAYS since second grade and has been selected in the past for the TCDA All State Elementary Honor Choir and ACDA national honor choirs.

She is currently entering grade 8, is homeschooled, and sings in the BAYS Concert Choir and Bel Canto.

Emma Bolton gives senior recital at Southern Methodist

Emma Bolton, BAYS alumna, presented her senior piano recital at Southern Methodist University Saturday, April 30.

Emma sang with BAYS from grades 3-12 and was our first singer/member to continue with our choir through high school.

Emma will continue her education at Northwestern University, where she will pursue a master’s degree in musicology. We are very proud of Emma!

Five singers selected for Honor Choir

Five singers have been selected for membership in the 2022 Southwestern Division of the American Choral Directors Association national honor choir.

The singers are Brynn Bolton, Christina Colocado, Zoe Hein, Caleb Teng, and Madelyn Zikogiannis.

They will rehearse and perform with the choir at the SWACDA convention in Little Rock, Ark., the first week of March.

The five were selected in a very competitive audition process. Congratulations to these fine singers!

Lori Wagner named director of Children’s Choir

Lori Wagner photoLori Wagner is the director of the Children’s Choir. She has more than twenty years of teaching experience and has conducted choirs at the elementary, middle school, high school, and adult levels.

She was fortunate to spend a year at the Kodály Institute in Kecskemét, Hungary, training in conducting, music education, and musicianship.

Lori is from New Orleans and comes to Houston after positions in Plano, New Orleans, and The Hague (Netherlands). She currently teaches music to students in grades 2-5 at Awty International School.

BAYS Singers to Perform in TCDA Select Choir

The Bay Area Youth Singers were selected as the children/youth choir to be featured in a concert at the Texas Choral Directors’ Association Convention in San Antonio July 23, 2021. A BAYS TCDA Select Choir was formed to rehearse and present this concert. After the death of long time BAYS artistic director, Brenda Varvoutis, Mrs. Nicole Daniel was named artistic director. She led the choir in rehearsals and preparations for the TCDA concert. Both the pre-TCDA concert to be presented at Clear Lake Presbyterian Church, 1511 El Dorado Blvd in Houston, on Monday, July 19, 7 p.m., and the TCDA Convention concert to be presented July 23, 6 p.m. at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in San Antonio are dedicated to the memory of Brenda Varvoutis.

Brenda Varvoutis Scholarships to be Awarded

The first Brenda Varvoutis memorial scholarships for singers pursuing college degrees in choral music education will be presented at the July 19 BAYS Pre-TCDA concert. The three recipients are graduates of South Houston High School in the Pasadena ISD where Mrs. Varvoutis served as choir director for many years.

Nicole Daniel named Artistic Director

The board of directors of the Bay Area Youth Singers named Mrs. Nicole Daniel Artistic Director for the organization at their June, 2021 meeting. Mrs. Daniel previously served as the Childrens’ Choir Director and had served as interim director for the Concert Choir during Mrs. Varvoutis extended illness. A new Childrens’ Choir Director will soon be named.
