The Bay Area Youth Singers is a non-profit, independent vocal music education organization. The school year choir program offers three vocal ensembles: The Children’s Choir is for singers entering grades 2-5 in the fall of 2022 (must be able to read). The Concert Choir serves children entering grades 5-12, and Bel Canto is for advanced and experienced older singers (audition required). All choirs rehearse on Monday evenings. They are directed and taught by professional vocal music educators.

The tuition for the 2022-23 season is $650 for both the Children’s Choir and Concert Choir. This may be paid in one payment of $650, or three installments ($250, $200, $200, with the final installment due by Nov. 15, 2022).

New singer/members will be welcomed into the choir beginning January 2, 2023. Register online and come to the first rehearsal. Tuition for ½ the 2022-23 season is $400 (payable in 4 $100 installments by April 30). Email for further information.

There is a fee to cover credit card and other handling charges. This fee has been added to each of the payment options. Bel Canto members add $100 in addition to the Concert Choir fee.

Singers develop healthy singing voices, music listening skills, music reading skills, self-discipline and work skills, poise, and self-confidence in performance. They are exposed to a range of musical genres, from classical to multi-cultural to musical theater to contemporary compositions. The choirs are open to boys and girls with unchanged, treble voices. Most young boys sing in their treble voices until reaching age 13-15; when their voices change and mature, they become tenors, baritones, or basses. Girls’ treble voices continue to develop as they mature into young women. Experts agree that continuing to sing through the period of voice change if very important for the vocal development of adolescents. The BAYS program strives to help young singers manipulate the voice change experience in a healthy way.

Singers in BAYS have the opportunity to develop solo as well as choral singing skills. They are encouraged and coached in auditions for local, state, and national honor choirs sponsored by the Texas and American Choral Directors Associations as well as the Texas Music Educators Association region and all-state choir auditions. Singers who display an interest in pursuing music in college receive extra support and guidance as they take this important step.

This is the beginning of the 16th season for the Bay Area Youth Singers. The past year and a half was challenging for all vocal music organizations; BAYS continued rehearsing online and presented several outdoor performances. The choir moved to in-person masked and distanced rehearsals and performances at the end of May. After being selected as the featured community children’s choir to perform at the Texas Choral Directors’ Association 2021 state convention in San Antonio July 23, the choir extended its school year performance schedule another two months in order to prepare for the convention concert. Selection as the only children/youth choir to perform at the TCDA convention was a distinct honor for the Bay Area Youth Singers.

Young singers who become a part of the BAYS program are expected to attend rehearsals regularly (conflicts with school activities are generally excused), to practice at home with the provided rehearsal tracks, to study their music and do some written assignments at home, and to participate in all performances. There are three major concerts per season: a holiday concert in December, the annual “Dessert & A Song” in February/March, and a Spring Concert in May along with several community service performances throughout the year.

Parents of BAYS members are asked and expected to support their children’s musical development, to attend performances, and to assist with fundraising for the organization.

A summer music camp is held in July. It is open to the public (usually for children entering grades 1-8) but is also an integral part of the BAYS school year choir program. Older singers in BAYS may serve as counselors and teaching assistants through an internship program. Campers sing and experience beginner-level group lessons in various instruments as well as having lots of fun making music and working with others.
